BULLETIN DEC 2008

As noted in our bulletin and on the board, we are facing supply problems on this product as a result of which we have no stock at this time.  We are making arrangements to have it compounded at a specialty pharmacy which is already familiar with these products, until such time as it is once again commercially produced. (Trust me, the pharmacy will do a good job at it... I used it for 3 years myself when it was made there.) I will post more details about this when I have a firm date as to when the first batch will be available. In the meantime please be aware that if you purchase it from the compounding pharmacy, a prescription will be required, so you need to discuss this with your doctor. If you are a regular user, presumbly your doctor knows all about it, but if you need assistance please let me know.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This revolutionary product has developed an intensely loyal following among users with moderate to severe dry eye. Dakrina is specially formulated for lasting nighttime protection and daytime relief of dry eye. The unique combination of polymers in Dakrina creates a superior adhesion to the ocular surface, resulting in improved "wettability".

Dakrina is basically a modified version of Dwelle with the addition of Vitamin A (retinyl palmitate). Medical literature over the years has suggested a connection between topical Vitamin A and ocular surface healing. Dry eye is a highly individual matter. We find that some of our customers do best on Dakrina while others do best on Dwelle, and many use both. Still others use a combination of either Dwelle or Dakrina (the heavy-hitters) and NutraTear (which is a lighter drop) - for example Dwelle or Dakrina at night/morning and during flare-ups, and NutraTear during the day or for maintenance.

REBECCA'S REVIEW

Overall assessment Historically, this drop has been most appreciated by auto-immune patients (Sjogrens, RA, lupus), and certain post LASIK and post cataract patients. Now comes the puzzling part. For many people, Dakrina seems to be a slam dunk from day one. For others though, we get a more mixed response. Dakrina has a very distinctive feel to it which is just plain different from your average artificial tear and which definitely disagrees with some patients initially. Why that is, I don't know, perhaps something specific about their tear composition. It's often described as a sort of "grabby" sensation. So my advice is, when you try Dakrina, BE PATIENT. Do not expect immediate relief. Plan on giving it a decent trial of at least a week and try to assess it on how you're doing overall after that week as opposed to how you feel immediately after the first application or two.

My personal experience: Of all of Dr. Holly's drops, Dakrina was my first love. It got me through the most difficult of times when nothing else helped. I will never forget it. I was about a year post LASIK, and six months pregnant, and simply crawling the walls with eye pain at night. I had come to a point of desperation where I was slathering my eyes with ointment and covering them with plastic wrap, and still could not get through a night without waking up in pain. I had known about these drops for some time but was skeptical. I finally got some of all four drops (Dwelle, Dakrina, NutraTear, FreshKote - this latter, by the way, is now available on prescription, sold by Focus Laboratories and is well worth trying) and tried each in turn. To be honest, at first I really did not like the feel of any of them and Dakrina was simply the least uncomfortable of the four. But I was determined to give it a fair trial and it is so fortunate that I did. Within a few days I was sleeping through the night again.

Since then, I've gone through lots of different dry eye phases where my use of these products has periodically shifted. For a long time I used mostly Dakrina and sometimes NutraTear, which for me were wonderfully complementary - bad day, Dakrina, good day, NutraTear. As of this update (07/07), I wear sclerals during the day and use mostly Dwelle at night and morning. But when I get a flare-up (seasonal changes, too much heat or aircon, travel, etc), Dakrina is there for me. It usually feels just like Dwelle, though occasionally it will give me that "grabby" feel on first instillation. Setting aside initial discomfort, there is simply no getting around the fact that it still gives more effective and longer lasting relief than other drops. Can't beat that.

Tip: If you find it uncomfortable, you might try a little saline rinse about 10-15 minutes prior to putting in Dakrina or Dwelle. I occasionally do this with Unisol if my eyes are very, very rough in the morning.

Who am I? My name is Rebecca Petris and I have had chronic dry eye since undergoing LASIK in July 2001. I founded The Dry Eye Company as a result of my experiences, hoping to make useful information and effective products more accessible to others with dry eye. Each product in this store has been personally tested and approved by me. For a list of my top favorites – the items I use on a daily basis myself – click here.
