WHAT THE MANUFACTURER SAYS

Tranquileyes eye hydrating therapy is a natural, proven way to bring relief to dry, irritated eyes. Unlike other dry eye treatments, tranquileyes is a soft, flexible goggle designed to form a moist, humid environment around the eye that helps stimulate tear production and prevent the evaporation of tears, while also moisturizing the delicate skin around the eyes.

Eye Cover
tranquileyes have beautifully-sculpted, anatomically designed eye covers that are made from medical grade, flexible rubber material that is FDA approved. The eye covers seal only the area required to hydrate the eyes delivering complete darkness and exceptional comfort. The eye covers rest on your orbital bones, thereby avoiding any restriction of blood flow to vital arteries above the nose and unnecessary pressure on the sensitive blood vessels under the eye.

Eye Cushions
Each eye cover features a comfortable eye cushion that is fabric lined and made from visco-elastic foam. The foam is specially designed to form to the face when warmed by body heat and provides increased comfort while creating a complete seal to the orbital area. This seal helps to control the temperature and humidity around the eye area.

Moisture Pads
Placed in each eye cover is a small pillow of the same fabric-lined, visco-elastic foam, called a moisture pad. The moisture pads are designed to be removed from the eye cover and placed in warm or cold water. Warm water moisturizes eyes and surrounding eye area, cold water reduces puffiness. After the moisture pads have soaked in water for 30 seconds, they are gently rung out, and then placed back in the eye covers prior to wear.

Head Wrap
A uniquely designed comfort wrap holds the eye covers in place and the stretch fabric ensures no pinching, even with extended wear. The comfort wrap is easily adjusted with two specially designed sliders, to ensure a custom fit and complete seal of the tranquileyes to the eye area

The Results
By comfortably sealing the area around the eye, and introducing heat and moisture, tranquileyes effectively increases humidity, creating a moisture chamber around the eye, which prevents the evaporation of tears, and keeps the entire eye area moist.

The therapeutic benefit of tranquileyes is cumulative and can extend well beyond the period of use. In as little as 20 minutes of wearing tranquileyes, you can relieve the symptoms of dry eye with a natural, drug-free hydration method. The benefits can be further enhanced using thermoeyes. For the best results, use tranquileyes daily for at least two weeks.

ABOUT THE FOAM PADS - note from Rebecca

There are two pieces of foam on each eyecup: The "eye cushions", which are stuck to the goggle with an adhesive, and the "moisture pads", which you (optionally) soak in warm water and squeeze out before place them in the goggle. Click on the goggle picture to see all the parts labelled.

Three important points about the foam:

(1) KEEP THEM CLEAN! You must wash the removeable moisture pads after each use. You can use the cleanser the manufacturer makes for it or another gentle antibacterial soap. If you're going to use this product, you need to be committed to keeping it clean. The last thing your vulnerable dry eyes need is exposure to bacteria. No shortcuts. That's just the removeable part though - as to the cushions on the goggle, use your own judgment about frequency of washing. To reduce the hassle factor and prolong the life of the cushions, you can get a Tini Bikini which wraps around the cushions - then  you wash that rather than the cushions.

(2) REPLACE THEM regularly. As a rough guide each pair should last four to six weeks. Again, a bikini will make them last a lot longer.

(3) CHOOSE YOUR TYPE: There are two types, the "lined" foam which has a sheer black fabric on the top and bottom, and the "sensitive skin" unlined foam. Some people end up with a very strong preference for one type or another. Personally I prefer the "sensitive skin" (unlined) foam and that's the type that comes with the goggle. I think the adhesive lasts a bit longer than the other which is another benefit. 

When purchasing spares, you can choose either type or if you'd like a mix just put a note on  your order.

WHAT REBECCA SAYS ABOUT TRANQUILEYES

I'm a big fan of any form of moisture-retaining eyewear whether for sleep or daytime use, and this is my top choice for most people with night and early morning symptoms. It's easily the best product available for night protection purposes and works well for dry eye, recurrent erosions, and incomplete eyelid closure (lagophthalmos).

For me personally, it's perfectly comfortable and reasonably low hassle. I don't always put any water on the moisture pads as I get plenty of benefit from it dry but even when I do, cleaning them is no big deal, about 30 seconds of effort each morning.

It is important to note that night eyewear tolerance and needs vary greatly. Even after all these years of working with people to find the right solutions I find it very difficult to predict what will work best for whom. Tranquileyes is usually what I recommend people to start with - you can return it if it doesn't work out, after all - because it does the most: forms a seal; adds moisture; and can help secure the eyelids (important for those of you with lagophthalmos or those for whom a sudden eyelid movement can prompt an erosion). But there's a certain percentage for whom it will not work as well, either do to comfort reasons or simply because another product does a better job keeping them moist. 

What to expect: Don't expect overnight results, and please, please don't give up if you don't see results in the first day or even the first week. I can't emphasize enough that this is not a product you fall in love with immediately - but for many, many people, it's something they end up swearing by. When I first started, it took a few days before I saw any difference at all, but after a while, the difference was very marked – and became more so over time. Your mileage may vary, of course! For me, the first difference I noticed was in a persistent grittiness in my right eye that I have had for years first thing in the morning. It was one of those things that I wasn't even totally conscious of until I started noticing it wasn't THERE anymore. Whoa.

Is it comfortable enough to sleep in? Now here's where the real individuality factor kicks in. Many, perhaps most people find this comfortable from the get-go. Sometimes someone finds it too tight or too loose and have to adjust something or even jury-rig the headwrap somehow. Occasionally someone finds the pads put too much or too little pressure on their lids; often there's solutions to that. Some people absolutely can't stand anything touching their lids – others, with severe lagophthalmos, absolutely must have something pressing on their lids. The good thing is, there are usually ways to make it work, and if there aren't, there's other products to try. Some people end up removing the central moisture pads and using it without those (though the side cushions won't hold up quite as well that way), or using a slimmer pad (look for Thermopads in the shop). Some people will have problems with it coming off at night. In my experience, most people either find a way to tweak it or simply unconsciously adjust to it within a week or so even if at first they have a rough time at first. But then, there's nothing like motivation is there. People who seek out this product usually really need it!

For those who are not able to get comfortable wearing Tranquileyes, my top suggestions based on customer feedback are Onyix/Quartz, Escape sleep mask, and Contour sleep mask.
