About supplements in the Dry Eye Shop

Omega 3 supplements for dry eye have been commonly recommended for people with dry eye ever since (perhaps even before) the famous Women's Health Study in 2005 indicated that "a higher dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids is associated with a decreased presence of DES [Dry Eye Syndrome] in women".

We are now offering some Omega-3 supplement options in the Dry Eye Shop as a convenience to customers, knowing that you may well already be using a supplement anyway and thinking that you might appreciate the convenience of buying them here to bundle them with other purchases.

Full disclosure - we do not consider ourselves the pros on supplements! Unlike many other items sold here (eye drops, gels, ointments; goggles & glasses; scleral lens supplies; etc), no one on our team can claim to have any particular expertise or knowledge in nutritional supplements of any kind. So, as a business, we're not in a position to give you guidance on which supplement is "best" or most suitable for you. Our goal is to stock a well-reputed brands and offer a range of prices, and thereafter to be guided by customer input about whether to add any more options. We strongly encourage you to ask your eye care provider about their experience and recommendations.

Expectations-wise, my (me = Rebecca) position on supplements tends to be "Think of this as *potentially* offering you some incremental benefit". I would want to temper expectations as I'd rather have you pleasantly surprised than disappointed. Dry Eye Shop attracts predominantly highly symptomatic people, many of whom have chronic and sometimes severe or rare diseases or conditions which often require multiple treatments and remedies to keep one's eyes comfortable and well. Because of our particular customer base, I do not advise placing strong reliance on any manufacturer claims that a supplement could replace artificial tears. Many of us use artificial tears for comfort, but some use them as a matter of medical necessity due to severe dryness and potential for ocular surface damage. As with all dry eye treatments and remedies, be guided by your eye care professional about what is best and safe for you.

    Product FAQ

Q: How does De 3 compare to store-bought fish oil?

A: De 3 contains 2240mg of EPA and DHA in an ultra-purified triglyceride (rTG) form, which is a similar form to a piece of fish, but without the impurities. This form is easier for your body to absorb and micro-distilled to remove contaminants like PCBs, lead, mercury and more. Many store-bought omega-3s contain less than 600mg of EPA and DHA and are in a synthetic (ester) or unpurified form, which is difficult to absorb and leaves a fishy odor/aftertaste.

Q: Can I get a sufficient amount of Omega-3s from just eating fish?

A: The American Heart Association and the American Cardiology Association recommend 2-3 grams of omega-3s daily (EPA+DHA). To get this amount of Omega 3s (generally equal to 3 soft gels of PRN Omega 3s daily) from eating fish, you would have to consume the equivalent of 37 cans of tuna per week! Eating this much fish could result in an increased risk for mercury poisoning. Other fish that can be purchased in stores are mostly farm-raised which have little Omega-3s, or wild-caught, which are optimal but have an increased risk of being contaminated with harmful PCBs, dioxins, mercury, etc.

    Q: Why not Flaxseed oil?

A: Flaxseed contains the plant source of Omega-3s, also known as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). This form is less easy to absorb and less effective in the body. Marine-based Omega-3s have been shown to be more absorbable which may provide systemic benefits.*
