REBECCA'S REVIEW
The Tini
Bikini is evidently intended mostly as a fashion accessory for the
goggle (think air travel)... but it has some very practical
applications for folks with dry eye.
The way it is
intended to be used, it would cover the front of the goggle (i.e.
the rubber eye covers), wrapping around the eye cushions at the
back and tucking under the moisture pads. It snaps at the two sides
and in the middle. It's a little awkward trying to tuck the flaps
in over the cushions, and you kind of have to squeeze to get those
moisture pads in, but if you're motivated, it's definitely
doable.
Why would you
bother (assuming you're buying it for some other reason than to
match your beachwear)?
Well, some
Tranquileyes users like to wash the eye cushions frequently, even
daily. The removable moisture pads are made to be washed after each
use but if you wash the eye cushions daily, they won't last too
long and replacing them frequently gets costly. So instead, you can
buy two or three bikinis (so that you always have at least one
clean), and use them over the cushions so that you don't have to
wash the cushions as often. Another use would be if you want to
apply skin products that you don't want to get on the foam. It's a
lot easier to wash the bikini than the foam.
Finally, some
people might benefit from the added bulk of the bikini as well...
it pushes the moisture pads forward, placing more pressure on the
eyelids (for those who want that pressure helping the lids stay
shut).
Another twist: When I
first got a Bikini, my instinct was to put it on backwards... that
is, wrap it around the moisture pad side of the goggle and snap it
over the front. Looks stupid, and of course it means the moisture
pads aren't directly against your eyes so not as much moisture is
coming through, but I think it has one or two possible uses. Some
people use eye ointment at night, either in or around their eyes.
Trying to get that out of the moisture pads in the morning is a
nuisance, so having the bikini completely cover the foam means the
bikini gets all the ointment. Also... for those of us with
poor lid closure, the added bulk AND tension translate into gentle
pressure on those lids.
It might sound
complicated, but many regular users of Tranquileyes will
understand... and I've talked to so many dozens of people agonizing
over how to get suitable night eye protection that I want to pass
on any tips or accessories that seem promising for some of the
special needs we have. If you have any feedback about this one,
please let me know, or report on it in Dry Eye Talk!
